In a Nutshell:

Many a times while you leave a comment on a WordPress powered blog, it’s only after hitting the “Submit Comment” that you realize that you have made a mistake in the comment that you published. In this article, we will look at a recently launched plugin using which you get the facility to allow the users on your blog to edit their comments.

Till date there is no feature in WordPress or no plugin available using which a user was allowed to revert or edit his/her comment so as to modify it. But Ronald Huereca and his team have come up with a plugin that allows the Webmasters to set the feature of allowing the users to edit their comment in case if they are willing to do so. This plugin is named – Simple Comment Editing.

It consists of a set of plugin related files consisting of just 23KB [very light] which I am sure will not cause too much server load for any webmaster. The plugin can be downloaded from here – Download link or you can just navigate to the Plugins page.  Go to the “Add a new plugin” page and search it there.

What does this plugin do?

It allows all the users, be it the one who is logged in, or an unregistered user to modify one’s own comment within a certain period of time. The default time set for this is 5 minutes. The webmaster can set this according to his convenience.

Drawback

This feature is not an official inclusion by WordPress. It is a plugin designed by a coder. So, only those blogs who have implemented this plugin can allow the users to edit/modify their comments.

Changing the Default edit time

Copy this piece of snippet in the functions.php file of your theme:

//Simple Comment Editing
add_filter( 'sce_comment_time', 'edit_sce_comment_time' );
function edit_sce_comment_time( $time_in_minutes ) {
    return 60;
}

The functions.php file is located in “your-blog-root-directory/wp-content/themes/your-current-theme-folder/”.  After placing the code, edit the value according to your preference.

My Take on This

A much needed feature that WordPress should take into consideration as many a times users end up typing wrong comments as a result of which their comment could be deleted. They can very well implement it in their next update and make it a standard feature for all the WordPress powered blogs.

    Thanks for sharing the use of plugin. I have recently tried this plugin and my comment was successfully updated with simple easy process.
    Is there a chance to edit the comments apart from wordpress blog? because I need to confirm that this feature is only available in wordpress or any other CMS also.
